Dealing with the heat

On the way home from the race at Merwin, we were discussing the heat and ways around it, possibly trying to not race in the hottest part of the day in close to triple digit temps. Is there any way to try and schedule the longer courses for the summer months so we could run the single race format at 11 to try and avoid some of the heat. I am sure there are complications with scheduling and things of that nature but any suggestions, ideas to help avoid racing in close to triple digit temps?! And I don't mean this to sound rude I know Dan and company put in a lot of hard work to make this series as fun and as safe as possible for everyone and they do a very good job of it!

I hear what your saying Ryan, but mother nature has been messin with me all year. I picked that date because it's supposed to be cooler....a lot cooler, average high temp on Sept 8th is 83 with the low of 64.......not even close.
Hopefully next year, me and mother nature can get together and get along a little better.

Yea I understand it's never gonna work out perfect but maybe some ideas to help, but it was still a great race thanks for all the hard work

As far as finding any way to 'beat the heat', the number one way is to protect yourself by 'pre-hydrating'. When I first started this series, I was told to start pre-hydrating the Wed before a race.
I generally tried to do this before each race. I did no such thing prior to the Chanute race this year and just about had to drop out of the race; I had a hell of a time trying to get caught back up afterwards. That is even after downing the entire content of my hydration pack during the race.
I drink 4 extra bottles of water a day starting on Wed; this helped tremendously this past Sunday at Merwin. Guess what I started yesterday???

I wouldn't mind this if it were announced the night before the race; I frequently drive 3-4 hours to get to these races and would not likely make the journey for a one hour race....

I agree! Not worth it for 1 hour. I say man up and run what ya brung! Kansas is hot in the summer so what!
