My assumption was based on the fact that the bottom half of the engine looked as bad as the top .

Was the bike at the bottom of a river for awhile, or did the head gasket leak while it sat all winter?

Come clean Brad... alot of us wanna hear how that top end, got that nasty!

Well all I can say is wash your bike with an exhaust plug or something to cover the exhaust and make sure the exhaust valves aren't open.

Thanks for clarifying that, Brad.... by stating the facts of why that head looked so nasty, you have, while admitting you inadvertantly made a mistake, have no doubt saved many an engine from just such a fate because everybody that reads this thread is ordering an exhaust plug,.... or remembering they own one.

Should I also say it's important to run good quality fuel. Wanna see that piston? Or do you want to see the cylinder that was ruined by letting race gas sit in the bike for too long? Once again good quality fuel. QuikTrip only for me now.
