My son has raced a few pee week big bike races this year on his kx 65. He wants to move up to the junior class next year. I'm just wondering what size bike he should be on to be competitive in that class. I was thinking of getting him anow 85... thoughts?

An 85 will be a good choice. If he thinks he would like to try a Junior race this year then the Melvern race would be a great way for him to get his feet wet if you think he is ready. Melvern is a real rider friendly course and he would be fine on a 65 as long as you or someone can spot for him. He could race the pee wee's in the morning at 9 and the Junior class at 11.

I really think it should be up to your son, if he wants to move up to a 85. Let him race what he is most comfortable on. Finish the season on a 65.
In the off season if he is ready to try out the 85. Ride as much as possible at Walters Ranch, lol when its open or somewhere that has gnarly terrain. If he can handle the bigger bike in rough stuff, all other races will be easier.

It takes a rider to be competitive not the size of the bike. I only wish I had a smaller bike, then my hands wouldn't hurt so much after each race.
