Big springs race report

A glorious day and a well laid out track and event. So much action at BS there was a little something for everyone. Thanks to the land owner for keeping the venue alive and to Perry as well as all the workers and FM crew for the hard work that went into the race. Good times even got to chat with Tom Brunholtz for a bit...good to see him in race gear again.

On to the report...from the 700's
Bike fired a little quicker than last week but still got a crappy start about 3/4 of the way to the back of the pack. Seems like I passed a lot of people but crossed 9th for a uneventful lap one. Lap two pushed up to 7th and lap 3 thru 6 to 4th and that's where I stayed the rest of the race. Since a vacation was coming next week I decided to keep it on two wheels and all bones in tact but no way was I going to catch the top guys they laid down some strong lap times.

Thinking 4th wasn't too bad too bad for a days work... until Ryan S rolls up a after the race in his Jack Nicholas 4x4 with the largest smile I've ever whiitnessed on a human. With drink in hand mentioned he forgot to register for the race and a few of us got bumped back a place. We had a good laugh in a joking protest to Protest to Perry I mentioned he should be DQ. We both laughed as it was pretty funny knowing the players and all in good fun.

Big Springs did it again. Perry managed to layout a track that had everything for everyone. The turnout says it all. It looked like every gate was full. I was very happy to be back in the FMHSC fold. I got to see so many riders from the last few years and I also got to mix it up with them.

The 700 race was a bit of a downer for me. I felt great and was breathing well for a change. My tire selection made me suffer in the mud, but on the dry areas it was on rails. Loved the MX track, got to slide by a few riders on the jumps. Lap #1 was smooth and predictable, but on lap #2, I started moving up. Unfortunately, so was Chris Locke. We were having a great time when Chris clipped a tree and flopped into the race line, where I ran over him. It did not look good from my point of view. I stayed with him until I could flag down someone with a yellow safety vest on. I headed down to the finish line to tell someone to get him some help. It took a while to get back in the groove, but by lap 4, I was feeling good again and was laying down some good times. As the checkered flag fell, I wanted to do more laps. Since my race partner had to catch a plane to Europe the next morning, we hit the road. The results caught me by surprise, I managed to do a 45 minute and a 39 minute lap. I felt so much faster, but in reality, Chris was on my mind. Such a great guy and to T-bone him really got to me.

I think he has a broken hand and possible ruptured spleen and a back issue. Please send prayers for him.

I was wondering where you went, Tom! I saw you behind me at the beginning part of I think the second lap and was expecting you to blow by me at some point but next thing I knew you were gone. Very sorry to hear about Chris and good on you for helping him out.

My race went pretty decent. 3rd going into the woods and like others have mentioned the course was just plain fun. I don't think I've smiled so much during a race before and I was honestly surprised that the checkers were out at the end. 6 laps went by so quickly because the course flowed so well and it was generally pretty easy to get around lappers because it was so wide. I ended up 6th which is pretty good for me but I wish I pushed a little more. Hats off to Ryan Walker for working us all for the win!
